The #puddlegram is one of the most popular hashtags on Instagram. This theme has been known to the history of photography at least since the time of famous street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Under the name of @nordisch_by_nature, Kay Palapies is Hamburg's best-known “puddle photographer” on Instagram. The Hanseatic city is reflected in his motifs.
Kay, you're forever in search of the best puddles. Where can you find the most fantastic puddles with the best reflections in Hamburg?
My favourite puddles are at the Landungsbrücken, the landing stages. They're constantly being washed with water because the port ferries dock at that point, so I always find puddles there even in fine weather.
Photographically speaking, what thrills you most about Hamburg (apart from puddles)?
I love everything in and around the port. Industry on one bank of the Elbe, city life on the other. Container ships passing by expensive villas, people sunbathing on the banks of the Elbe while cargo is being discharged at the Burchard Quay on the other side – or the landing stages with their flocks of tourists and the panorama of Blohm & Voss.
There's always something new to discover, at any time of the day or year.
What are the must-see places for a visitor to Hamburg? And what Instagramers from Hamburg should you definitely follow?
Apart from the well-known places like the Sternschanze and Speicherstadt districts, I recommend a stroll from the landing stages to Teufelsbrück. It's just under seven kilometres, with the fish market, dockland, Strandperle beach and the narrow little lanes of Övelgönne all there to be discovered. If you're out with a bike or are up for an even longer walk, you can extend the route to Blankenese and explore its Treppenviertel district. One of my favourite Instagramers is Andrés @anlinsh. He has a phenomenal eye for line and as a result he rekindles your interest in old, familiar things.
Kay, thanks for the talk and ahoi!
